sphear me transforms a polyhedron into varying degrees of its unit sphere. Or something. Basically, it "spherizes" an object, and allows you to keyframe the vertex manipulation for creative animation possibilities.
This works well for cartoon style modeling, where you need to bulge out an object. Another inventive use is with planes (or even better, cp3's planet planes) that are textured. It gives a nice stretching in the middle.
