Another use for the flame generator is smoke. (A not-funny joke would be to say "where there's smoke, there's fire..) By applying the smooth, desaturation, and contrast filters, you will get a reasonable result, but if you go a couple of steps further and first render a smoke sequence then use that as the input to the image generator, you can scale up the bitmaps and the image generator will apply even more smoothing, giving a better result.
